Can you use an Apple Gift Card for Apple Pay? Not as a general payment card at ordinary Apple Pay merchants. Redeeming an Apple Gift Card adds value to your Apple Account balance. That balance can pay for eligible Apple products, apps, media and subscriptions, but it does not become a debit card, Apple Cash or money you can spend at any shop that accepts Apple Pay.
There is one important source of confusion: in supported countries and regions, Apple lets users add an Apple Account card to Wallet and may let them use that balance through Apple Pay at an Apple Store. That limited Apple purchase flow does not make the balance usable at supermarkets, restaurants, fuel stations or unrelated online stores.
The short version
- You cannot add an Apple Gift Card to Wallet as if it were a bank card.
- You redeem the code to your Apple Account balance.
- In some countries or regions, Wallet can display an Apple Account card with that balance.
- The balance pays for eligible Apple purchases; it is not a general Apple Pay funding source.
- You cannot normally withdraw it as cash, send it to another person or transfer it to a bank account.
Availability and purchase rules differ by country, card type and account region. Always check the Apple support and legal pages for the country where the card was issued.
Apple Gift Card, Apple Account balance, Wallet and Apple Pay are different
The names sit close together, but they describe four separate things.
Apple Gift Card
This is the physical or digital card containing a redemption code. The card is tied to a country or region and is subject to the terms for that market. Once you redeem the code, its value becomes part of your Apple Account balance.
If you are unsure which type you have, read What Is an Apple Gift Card? before redeeming it. Older App Store & iTunes cards and older Apple Store cards may have different permitted uses.
Apple Account balance
This is stored value associated with your Apple Account. It can include redeemed gift-card value and money you add through an accepted payment method. Apple says the balance can be used for eligible apps, games, in-app purchases, media, iCloud+ and other subscriptions. In countries where the unified Apple Gift Card is available, it may also pay for eligible products and accessories from Apple.
Apple Wallet
Wallet is the app that holds supported payment cards, passes, tickets and, in some regions, an Apple Account card. Seeing an Apple Account balance in Wallet does not change the legal or technical restrictions on that balance.
Think of Wallet as the place that displays or presents the balance, not a machine that converts gift-card value into bank money.
Apple Pay
Apple Pay is a payment service used with supported cards and account features. Apple states that cards used in Apple Pay are offered by their issuers. A gift-card code is not a debit or credit card issued by a bank, so it cannot simply be added as a normal Apple Pay card.
Can you add an Apple Gift Card to Apple Wallet?
If you are trying to add Apple Gift Card to Apple Wallet, the important distinction is that you cannot add the code itself as a standard payment card. Instead, you redeem it to the matching Apple Account.
On an iPhone, redemption is generally available through the App Store: tap your account image, choose Redeem Gift Card or Code, then scan or manually enter the code. Apple also documents redemption from the Apple Account card in Wallet where that feature is available.
After redemption, some users can add an Apple Account card to Wallet and see the current balance and recent transactions. The option to use Apple Account balance in Wallet is limited to supported countries and regions, and the balance keeps its Apple-only purchase restrictions.
If the balance does not appear in Wallet, check it in the App Store instead. Our separate guide explains how to check an Apple Gift Card or Apple Account balance.
Where can the redeemed balance be used?
Apple’s current support guidance lists these common eligible uses, with availability varying by region:
- apps, games and in-app purchases from the App Store;
- music, films, books and other eligible media;
- subscriptions such as Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple TV and iCloud+;
- products and accessories from Apple in markets where Apple Gift Card supports those purchases;
- eligible third-party app subscriptions billed through the App Store.
Some purchases may still require another valid payment method on file. Some subscriptions and recurring charges may also have additional restrictions.
The safe rule is simple: Apple Account balance is for eligible purchases within Apple’s own stores and services. It is not designed as an open-loop prepaid card for the wider retail network.
The Apple Store exception: paying through Wallet
Apple’s iPhone guide says that, in supported regions, an Apple Account balance in Wallet can be presented through Apple Pay during checkout at an Apple Store. The user selects the Apple Account card, authenticates and presents the device at the reader.
This is an Apple-specific checkout experience, not a standard Apple Gift Card Apple Pay integration for external stores. It does not mean the same Apple Account card will work at every terminal showing the Apple Pay symbol.
Apple’s features and gift-card terms are country-specific, and even Apple’s US legal terms distinguish the Apple Account virtual card used at Apple Retail Stores from ordinary Apple Pay payment methods. Check the current local documentation before relying on the in-store feature.
Where the balance does not work
An Apple Account balance generally cannot be used to:
- pay at unrelated supermarkets, restaurants, transport services or other Apple Pay merchants;
- send person-to-person payments;
- become Apple Cash;
- transfer funds to a debit card, bank account or mobile-money account;
- buy another gift card or send a gift from the balance;
- let a Family Sharing member spend your personal Apple Account balance;
- obtain cash, except where local law specifically requires a cash refund.
It is also important not to confuse an Apple Gift Card with Apple Card, Apple’s credit-card product in supported markets, or with Apple Cash, a separate US feature. Similar names do not make the balances interchangeable.
Why does the balance show in Wallet if it is not general Apple Pay money?
Wallet can hold more than bank cards. It can display tickets, passes and account cards with limited acceptance. The Apple Account card is a convenient way to view and present eligible Apple purchasing power, but the issuer’s terms still control where that value can be spent.
A closed-loop balance can therefore sit inside the same app as an open-loop bank card without gaining the bank card’s acceptance network.
Can you turn an Apple Gift Card into cash?
Apple’s terms generally say gift cards and unused Apple Account balances are not redeemable for cash, refundable, exchangeable or transferable, except where required by law. If you are searching for an Apple Gift Card cash out method, be cautious: a third party offering to “cash out” a redeemed Apple balance may be asking for account access or attempting a scam.
If the gift card is still unused and you intend to trade it, do not redeem it merely to test whether it works. Redemption attaches the value to your Apple Account and changes what you have: it is no longer an unused code that another eligible account can redeem.
What if your Apple Gift Card will not redeem?
Do not keep trying random accounts or regions. Apple identifies several common messages: invalid card, already redeemed, not activated and country or region mismatch.
- For an activation error, return to the retailer with the receipt.
- For an already-redeemed message, sign out and back in to refresh the balance, then check the correct Apple Account.
- For a region error, use an account that legitimately matches the card’s issuing region; Apple gift cards cannot simply be redeemed outside their country or region of purchase.
- For a damaged code, contact Apple Support and keep the card, serial number and receipt.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use an Apple Gift Card to pay for Apple Music or iCloud+?
Apple lists Apple Music and iCloud+ among the services that can normally be paid from Apple Account balance, subject to country availability and account requirements. Some purchases may require a valid backup payment method.
Can I use an Apple Gift Card at a shop that accepts Apple Pay?
Not generally. Acceptance of Apple Pay does not make a merchant eligible to take Apple Account gift-card balance. The documented Wallet exception applies to eligible Apple Store purchases in supported regions.
Can I move Apple Gift Card balance from one Apple Account to another?
Apple says unused associated balances are not transferable. Check the Apple Account and region before redeeming the code.
Is Apple Account balance the same as Apple Cash?
No. Apple Account balance is stored value for eligible Apple purchases. Apple Cash is a separate financial feature with its own availability and rules.
Can I use an iTunes Gift Card with Apple Pay?
Redeeming an App Store & iTunes Gift Card adds value to an Apple Account for eligible media and services. It does not turn the code into a general Apple Pay card. The exact products available depend on the card and country terms.
