Do gift cards expire if you don’t use them? Sometimes—but there is no single rule for every card. A paid store gift card may have no expiry date, a card from the same brand in another country may last a fixed number of years, and a promotional credit may expire much sooner.

The correct answer depends on seven things: the issuer, country, card type, purchase date, source of the funds, whether the card was redeemed and the law that applies. Check those details before buying, storing or trading a card.

1. Check the exact type of value you have

People use “gift card” for several products that can follow different rules:

  • a physical store gift card bought with money;
  • a digital gift card or claim code bought online;
  • a promotional code given free with a purchase;
  • loyalty or survey credit;
  • a refund placed into store credit;
  • a bank-network prepaid card;
  • a paper or electronic gift certificate.

A retailer may advertise that its purchased gift cards do not expire while still placing a deadline on promotional credits. That is not necessarily a contradiction: the balances came from different programmes.

When asking do digital gift cards expire, therefore, “digital” is not enough information. Find out whether it is purchased value, a promotion or another form of credit.

2. Use the terms for the issuing country

Gift-card programmes are often regional. The same company can have different issuers, consumer laws and expiration rules in different markets.

Amazon is a useful example. Amazon’s US materials state that Amazon.com Gift Cards issued after 1 October 2005 do not expire. Amazon.co.uk’s current terms, however, say its gift cards and unused balances expire ten years after issuance. Both statements can be correct because they govern different programmes.

Apple’s Australian Apple Gift Card terms state that the gift card has no expiration date. That sentence should not be copied onto a card from another country without checking the local Apple terms first.

The lesson is broader than either company: match the card’s country, currency and issuer to the correct legal page.

3. Look for an expiry date—but do not stop there

A gift card expiration date may appear on the back of a physical card, in the delivery email, in an account balance screen or in linked terms and conditions. Record the date and take a clear photo of the non-sensitive parts of the card and receipt.

In some systems, the plastic card or certificate can show a date even when the underlying funds have a longer legal life. For covered gift cards in the United States, federal rules generally require the funds to remain available for at least five years after issue or, for certain reloadable cards, after the last load. CFPB rules also address replacement or continued access when the card expires before the funds.

That US rule is not a worldwide rule and does not cover every promotional, loyalty or prepaid product. State law may provide additional rights. For a legal dispute, consult the relevant regulator or a qualified adviser rather than relying only on a blog summary.

4. Separate gift-card funds from promotional balance

Promotional value often has a shorter life than paid value. Google Play, for example, tells users that some promotional codes and promotional balance credits have expiration dates. Its help pages distinguish those promotions from gift cards and prepaid Play balance.

Country changes can also override a general assumption. Google says Play gift cards and gift-card-funded balances expired in Singapore on 1 February 2025. Its country list also says Malaysia stopped selling Play gift cards in 2025 and remaining gift cards and prepaid Play balance expired on 31 January 2026.

5. Check what happens before and after redemption

An unredeemed code and an account balance are not always governed in exactly the same way. Redemption may move the value from a card into a closed account balance, after which account rules, regional restrictions and inactivity policies can matter.

Before redeeming:

  • confirm that you are using the correct account and country;
  • record the card and receipt details securely;
  • check whether redemption is irreversible;
  • do not redeem merely to test a card you intend to transfer or trade.

After redeeming, check the account’s transaction history and any displayed expiry date. Do not assume the original card can still be used after its value has moved into an account.

6. Do not confuse expiry with a redemption error

If an old gift card fails, expiration is only one possible cause. Common alternatives include:

  • the retailer never activated the card;
  • the code was entered incorrectly;
  • the card belongs to another country or currency;
  • someone already redeemed it;
  • the code or protective strip is damaged;
  • the issuer cancelled the code after a refund or fraud report;
  • the account needs verification or has reached a balance limit.

7. Check for inactivity or service fees

Expiration and fees are different. A card may remain valid while inactivity or service fees gradually reduce its balance, if those charges are permitted and disclosed.

For many covered US gift cards, federal rules generally prohibit dormancy, inactivity and service fees unless there has been no activity for at least one year and other disclosure conditions are met. Other countries have their own rules, and some products are outside those protections.

Check the balance periodically. If it has fallen without a purchase, compare the transaction history with the fee section of the terms and contact the issuer.

What to do if your gift card has expired

  1. Read the exact screen message and confirm that it actually says expired.
  2. Find the purchase date, card number or serial number, receipt and delivery email—but keep the redemption code private.
  3. Open the official terms for the issuing country and card type.
  4. Check whether the card date expired while the funds remain legally available.
  5. Contact the issuer and ask about replacement, reissue or restoration.
  6. If consumer law may protect the funds, contact the relevant consumer regulator or obtain local advice.

Do not pay an “unlock fee” to a stranger. An issuer controls its own balance and code status; a social-media agent cannot legitimately extend an expiry date in the issuer’s system.

Before buying or trading an older gift card

Age alone does not prove that a card is worthless, but it increases the need for evidence. Check:

  • brand and exact card programme;
  • issuing country and currency;
  • physical or digital format;
  • purchase and stated expiry dates;
  • receipt or order confirmation;
  • activation status;
  • whether the code is unused;
  • whether it came from a promotion;
  • issuer notices about programme closure or country withdrawal.
